China Export Leading Index 41.9 in Aug, Even with July

For August 2017, China’s Export Leading Index (ELI) was 41.9, even with this July. As revealed by online questionnaire survey, this Aug’s Export Manager Index was 44.7, down 0.2 from July; New Export Order Index dropped by 0.6 to 47.8; Export Managers Confidence Index rose by 0.3 to 50.9; Export Enterprises Comprehensive Cost Index dropped 0.6 to 22.6.

1. Down in Export Manager Index for all enterprises: For August, China’s large, medium and small enterprises had Export Manager Index down respectively by 0.1, 0.5 and 0.3 to 48.4, 41.3 and 39.7 respectively.

2. Even in enterprises revealing year-on-year (YOY) rise in their new order value: Shown by the online survey for August, the enterprises revealing YOY rise in their new order value accounted for 31.2%, even with July; the enterprises revealing YOY fall in the new order value accounted for 39.3%, more by 0.9 percentage point than July; and those revealing no change therein accounted for 29.5%.

3. More enterprises optimistic about export for the next 2-3 months: According to the online survey result, the enterprises expressing “optimistic” accounted for 30%, more by 1.3 percentage points than July; those expressing “not optimistic” accounted for 31.5%, more by 0.5 percentage point; the enterprises with the same confidence as in July accounted for 38.5%.

4. More respondents revealing cost rise: According to the online survey result, the enterprises revealing YOY rise in their export cost accounted for 60.3%, more by 1.3 percentage points than July; those revealing YOY cost evenness accounted for 34.9%; and those with YOY cost fall accounted for 4.8%.

According to the survey result by itemized costs for August, the enterprises revealing increase in labor cost accounted for 56.1%, less by 0.9 percentage point than July; those revealing increase in raw material cost accounted for 55.2%, more by 3.7 percentage points than July; those revealing increase in foreign exchange cost accounted for 36.5%, more by 1.5 percentage points than July.
