EU Provides Georgia with Crisis Response Assistance

[2009-01-21 11:26:22]

The European Commission has provided Georgia with nearly 120 million euros (156 million U.S. dollars) as crisis response assistance after the country's war last August with Russia, the commission said Tuesday.
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the European Union (EU) commissioner for external relations and European neighborhood policy, began a visit to Georgia on Tuesday.

During the trip, she was to announce the latest release of 61.5million euros (80 million U.S. dollars) in efforts to help resettle Internally Displaced People (IDPs) resulting from conflicts in the country in the 1990s and August 2008.

The funds for Georgia form part of a growth and stabilization package of up to 500 million euros (650 million dollars) covering the period 2008-2010, which was pledged by the commission after last summer's conflict.

"The commission has acted swiftly to help Georgia in its time of need. Providing accommodation for Internally Displaced Persons is crucial," Ferrero-Waldner said on the eve of her visit.

The assistance package for Georgia in 2008-2010 aims to provide humanitarian aid and assistance to IDPs, support economic recovery, macro-financial stabilization and rehabilitation of infrastructure.
