Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso announced here Saturday his country will provide 1.5 trillion yen (17 billion U.S. dollars) to help other Asian countries boost growth amid the global financial crisis.
"Japan is ready to provide ODA (overseas development assistance) no less than 1.5 trillion yen in total," Prime Minister Taro Aso announced the package in a speech to the World Economic Forum held in the renowned Alpine resort.
He also pledged Japan's own efforts of stimulus packages worth a total of 75 trillion yen (1.05 trillion U.S. dollars) so as to increase domestic demand.
Aso called for closer international cooperation to fight the global financial crisis, asking other nations to adopt similar economic policies.
More than 40 heads of state or government, including Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and some 1,400 business leaders, attended the five-day forum that kicked off on Jan. 28 to discuss ways to tackle the ongoing financial crisis and other global challenges.
