National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection to Hold Public Meetin

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2008 - The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today that the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI) will hold public meetings Feb. 5-6, 2008, to discuss issues related to public health-based slaughter inspection systems for slaughter and processing establishments.



The meeting will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, and Wednesday, Feb. 6. All committee and subcommittee meetings will be held at the Key Bridge Marriott, 1401 Lee Highway, Arlington, Va.



Issues to be discussed include the planned public health-based slaughter inspection system for young chickens and how a similar approach could be used for inspection in processing and other slaughter establishments.



A copy of the agenda and supplementary information will be available prior to the meeting on FSIS' Web site at http://www.fsis.usda.gov .



The NACMPI was established in 1971 to provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture regarding meat and poultry inspection programs. The committee, which generally meets twice a year, addresses food safety and policy issues affecting USDA.
