Italy plays the main role in Europe accounting for 38% of the total EU-27 output, with an average yield of 6,5 million tons per year between 2003 and 2007 (both industry and fresh tomatoes). Considering the average total tomato production registered from 2003 to 2007, 5.2 million tons are destined to processing (53% of the whole EU??s processed volume) and 1.3 million tons are destined to fresh consumption. In this field Italy plays a less important role (only 19% of the offer). Specifically, in 2008 industrial production amounted to 4.7 million tons (+1.2% over 2007). The cultivated surface increased by 8%, up to more than 68,000 ha.

These data confirm that the CAP reform, with its three-year transitory stage didn??t damage Italy??s offer system. Production held out also thanks to the good prices offered to growers in the bargaining: in 2008 the price of tomato for processing increased by ca. 60%.
