China’s coal and coke export price down in Nov

China’s export price of coal and coke both declined in Nov, according to data released by China Custom on Wednesday.

The average export price of coal and coke stood at 1497 yuan/t and 5682 yuan/t, down 6.25 yuan/t and 362.59 yuan/t, respectively. It’s the first slowdown since this year.

The export volume of coal only up 5% to 2.69 million tonnes in Nov, while the total volume in Jan-Nov tumbled 13.7 % from last year to 40.97 million tonnes, valued $4,577 million, growing 57% from $2,916 million last year.

Henry Liu from Macquarie Bank contributed the price slowdown to global financial crisis and shrunk abroad demands, but predicted that export volume may go up in Dec slightly.

Data also shows that the total volume of the coke export dropped 16.9% to 11.9 million tonnes in Jan-Nov period. Coke export in November tumbled to 320 thousand tonnes from 526 thousand tonnes in Oct.

Although the export prices of coke slipped down in Nov, the total value of coke export still grew 107% year on year, and the average price in Jan-Nov surged by 149% to US$479.91 from US$192.83 Last year.
