US Mining Companies Awarded for Environmental Achievements

US coal and mineral mining companies have won environmental awards from federal agencies, it was announced at MINExpo in Las Vegas, US.
Among the eleven winners of the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) Excellence in Surface Mining Awards for Coal Companies were Luminant Mining Company, Black Beauty Coal Company and Rio Tinto Energy America.
US mining companies have so far reclaimed more than 2.5 million acres of land restoring them to productive use, according to the National Mining Association.
"These awards are a tribute to the dedicated efforts of the managers and employees of these companies, who have moved American mining into the environmental age," said director of the US Bureau of Land Management, James L Caswell.
US Department of the Interior officials presided over the awards luncheon at the event.
