A massive 7,000 carat diamond ? twice as big as the largest on record ? has been found at a South African mine according to local reports.

Johannesburg's Cape Times newspaper quoted mine shareholders as saying the stone is between 6,500 and 8,000 carats.

The Cullinan Diamond, believed to be the largest on record, was discovered near Pretoria in 1905, weighing about 3,106 carats uncut.

The find, excavated at a mine in the country's North-West Province, is being treated with caution according to South African newspapers. Diamond experts are said to be eagerly awaiting images of the stone for analysis.
