Rescuers are planning to drill a fifth hole into a collapsed Utah coal mine in the next stage of a rescue operation to free six trapped coal miners in the US.

There has been no trace of the six men who were trapped when the Crandall Canyon Mine collapsed on August 6.

Operations were halted last week after three rescuers were killed in a cave-in.

It is expected to take until at least Wednesday for the fifth bore hole to reach 2,039ft below the surface into the mine, according to the rescue team.

A microphone and video camera lowered over 1,600ft (488m) into the fourth drill hole over the weekend did not detect any signs of life.
