Japan's Polished Diamond Imports -17% in Oct. 

Japan's polished diamond imports fell 16.9 percent to $74.92 million in October 2008, according to data compiled by The JClub, from the country's Customs Bureau and Ministry of Finance. By volume, imports declined 13.9 percent to 229,706 carats.   Buying from India, Japan's polished diamond largest source, dropped 32 percent to $33.19 million, and from Israel by 23 percent to $6.82 million. Imports from Belgium increased 19 percent to $21.3 million.   For the first 10 months of the year, Japan's polished diamond imports fell 11 percent to $670.99 million.   Gold jewelry imports to Japan fell 6 percent to $80.67 million in October but were still 8 percent higher to $705.66 million between January and October. Platinum jewelry imports grew 34 percent to $47.66 million during the month, and by 15 percent for the year to $397.56 million.   October imports of silver jewelry declined 18 percent to $29.76 million, while other articles of precious metals remained flat at $381,000.   The country's buying of ruby, sapphire and emeralds dropped 51 percent to $3.1 million in October, while pearl imports slowed by 60 percent to $23.21 million, and other colored stones fell 38 percent to $4.04 million.   The data follows news released in October that Japan's economy, the second largest in the world, officially slid into a recession in the July-September period as the economy shrank for the second consecutive quarter.   Source:http://www.diamonds.net
