Antique Helmets
[2008-12-23 17:24:57]
Helmets are protective headgears made
of hard material including metal to resist blows. This defensive
covering for the head was made of hardened steel and iron for maximum
protection. Antique helmets belonging to the medieval period were made
of leather & iron and covered the entire head, with only a narrow
opening in front for vision and breath. These rare helmets are now used
for decorative purpose.
Style and Design
The earliest helmets were very basic, made of hard metals and were used only as a covering, with the passage of time, the designs of these helmets changed and became more appealing with elaborate carvings, stone work and use of metallic chains. The work, symbols and patterns on these helmets also help to distinguish between various ranks in the army.
These rare helmets are available with antique dealers and collectors for selective buyers and the value can vary depending on the age and authenticity.
