Kunming Economic and Technological Development Zone

Introduction
Kunming Economic and
Technological Development Zone (KMETDZ) is a
state-level zone established in 1992. It is the
only such zone in Yunnan province.
The Zone has a development area of 9.8
km
2
, and over 6.58 km
2
has
been well developed. The Zone is 5 km to the
downtown area, 1.8 km to Kunming International
Airport and 3 km to Junming Railway Station. The
Railway Station has several main railroads
connecting Kunming to Guizhou, Guangxi and
Vietnam.
Investment
Climate
At the end of 2003, KMETDZ's
total commitment in fixed assets investment was
RMB 6.2 billion (USD 750 million). More than 44
foreign investment projects had been undertaken in
the Zone with a contractual foreign investment of
USD 164 million and utilized investment of USD
84.33 million.
Seven projects have investments of over USD
10 million. There are 117 domestic enterprises,
ten are high-tech ones.
In 2003, the GDP of the Zone was RMB 2
billion (USD 240 million), 23.7% higher than in
2002.
The main industries of KMETDZ include optical
electromechanical integration, biological
pharmaceutical industry and tobacco-related
industries.
Major enterprises in the Zone include Yunnan
Tobacco, Kunlene Film, Maxyee and Yunnan
Aerospace.
