Press Release for the Conclusion of the 12th CXMEE

     The four-day 12 th China Xiamen Machinery & Electronics Exhibition (CXMEE) concluded on April 11, 2008 in Xiamen with fruitful results. With special authorization by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, CXMEE is jointly organized by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, Taiwan Electric and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, and Xiamen Municipal People’s Government.   Cheng Siwei, former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and a prominent economist, announced the opening of CXMEE. Ye Kedong, Vice Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council; Li Shuilin, former Assistant Minister of Commerce and President of the Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Exchange Association; Lin Qiang, member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress; officials from the State Council agencies and Fujian and Xiamen municipal governments; Jiao Youjun, Director-General of Taiwan Electric and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association; and Huang Maoxiong, Taiwan Commerce and Industry Association; as well as many other domestic and foreign dignitaries, attended CXMEE. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China has officially become a CXMEE endorser from the 12 th CXMEE, boosting the CXMEE’s organizing resources.   The 12 th CXMEE continued to receive extensive attention from overseas business groups and industry professionals, who took an active part in the events. A total of 27 delegations, including Taiwan Electric and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, Taiwan Industry and Commerce Association, and Taipei Importers and Exporters Association, were represented at the exhibition.   With the concerted efforts of machinery and electronic industries across the Taiwan Straits, the 12 th CMXEE saw a significant improve in overall standard and scale, richer functions, greater specialization, and more significant results. It exhibited the following four major characteristics:   I.     CXMEE has become a vital platform for cross-straits cooperation and concerted efforts in jointly tapping the global machinery and electronics market.   Following 12 years of cultivation and growth, CXMEE’s exhibition scale has been expanding steadily and its standard rising constantly, cementing its position as a first-class machinery and electronics exhibition in Asia. The 12 th CXMEE attracted a total of 715 enterprises from across the Taiwan Straits, which set up 1810 booths, with a total exhibition area of 40000 square meters, the highest number on record. The “China (Xiamen) Energy Efficient Lighting Exhibition 2008” and the “Cross-Strait Flat Panel Displays Exhibition”, both held during CMXEE, were the highlights of CXMEE. They drew 74 related enterprises and showcased the state-of-the-art products and technologies.   Taiwanese enterprises had a larger presence at the year’s CXMEE. Nearly 200 Taiwan-funded enterprises, with more than 500 booths, were featured at CXMEE, twice the figures of last year’s CXMEE. The tremendous results have demonstrated that CXMEE has started to show a siphon effect and emerged as an essential platform for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to tap into the global market. Furthermore, nearly 100 world-class industry giants from Japan, Germany, the United States, South Korea and Italy attended CXMEE. Mainland, Taiwan and world brands have formed a tripartite complex at this year’s exhibition.   This year’s CXMEE featured stronger cohesive and branding effects. Machinery continued to be the single largest category of exhibits, taking up more than 900 booths. Instruments, industrial control, moulds, and energy efficient lighting products were also showcased on a significant scale. A large number of cutting-edge technologies were displayed as well, including the state-of-the-art ECH20 Cleaning Technology, developed by Ruishi Enterprise.   As of noon of April 11, the 12th CXMEE has attracted 27,815 professional visitors from 39 countries and territories, including 4,352 overseas visitors. Taiwan continued to be the largest source of overseas visitors, with 2242 visitors. During the CXMEE, more than 50,000 domestic and overseas people traded at or toured the exhibition.   This year’s CXMEE saw booming trading and delivered substantial results for exhibitors. Most exhibitors expressed satisfaction with the results and as much as 60% of them received substantial orders and expressions of interest. For example, Shenzhen-based Dazu Laser won orders worth more than RMB 15 million, Beijing AgieCharmilles and Bochuang Guangzhou both secured deals worth more than RMB 10 million, and many enterprises, including Korea’s Hyundai Kia, China’s Haitai, Mingxin Welding, Xihuaguang and Guangzhou Hongli, each clinched deals worth more than RMB 2 million. Many exhibitors indicated their intensions to return to CXMEE next year.   II.    CXMEE has become a major platform to facilitate cross-strait economic and trade exchanges and promote high technologies, with its forward-looking, pragmatic and relevant features.   This year’s CXMEE presented 17 forums and seminars on cross-straits economic and trade exchanges, machinery and electronics markets, industry cooperation, and specialized technology. More than 60 dignitaries from the Greater China Region spoke at the events and more than 4,000 industrial professionals were in attendance.   The Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Forum, a signature forum of CXMEE, drew extensive attention. Themed around “Taiwanese Investment in the Mainland over the Past Two Decades: Retrospect and Outlooks”, the Forum provided an opportunity for the business community to take stock of the experiences of Taiwanese investment in the mainland and its prospects. Cheng Siwei, former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee and the National People’s Congress and a prominent economist delivered a keynote speech entitled “Outlooks on Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Growth”, stating that he is “cautiously optimistic” about cross-straits economic and trade growth. Other speakers at the forum include Li Shuilin, former Assistant Minister of Commerce and President of the Association of Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Exchanges; Liu Cigui, Vice Secretary of the CPC Xiamen Municipal Committee and Mayor of Xiamen; Hong Eryao, Secretary-General of the National Union of Taiwanese Invested Enterprises; Jiao Erjun, Director of Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association; Huang Maoxiong, the Chinese National Association of Industry & Commerce; Chen Jialing, Chair of the Board of Directors of Taiwan Shih Hsin University; Zhang Guanhua, Vice President of the Taiwan Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Li Fei, Vice Director of the Center for Taiwan Studies at Xiamen University; Wang Zhigang, Professor of Taiwan Yuan Ze University; and Zeng Qinzhao, President of Xiamen Association of Taiwanese Enterprises. Provincial and municipal leaders Ye Shuangyu, Guo Zhenjia, Chen Zhaoyang and Huang Ling attended the forum, which was presided over by Fang Wei, Vice Director of the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Department of the Ministry of Commerce   The 2 nd Cross-Straits Plat Panel Display Industry Cooperation Forum, themed around “Cross-Straits Cooperation and Joint Efforts to Build the Global Flat Panel Display Industry Chain”, provided in-depth discussions of the industry’s current conditions, future prospects, cooperation modes, innovations, and latest technologies. The Cross-Straits Optical Fiber Communications Industry Forum 2008 and the Cross-Straits Automobile Industry Cooperation Forum 2008, as well as many other exchange events, provide a key platform for promoting cross-straits exchanges and cooperation.   During CXMEE, the 2008 LED Outdoor Public Lighting Technical Standards Seminar, the 2008 China (Xiamen) Energy-Efficient Lighting Press Release Conference, the 1 st China (Xiamen) Cross-Straits E-Commerce Development Forum, the Western Coast Logistics & Commerce Lecture Hall, and the Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Development Prospects Seminar, all played an instrumental role in promoting the economic and trade exchanges and cooperation and in releasing relevant information.   III.   With trade stimulating investment and projects stimulating cooperation, CXMEE has evolved into the most optimal platform for promoting industry upgrading across the Taiwan Straits and the development of the western coast of Taiwan Straits.   At this year’s CMXEE, in light of the hot projects in cross-straits investment and trade and the needs of the market, provided matchmaking symposia for the LED, automotive electronics and integrated circuit industries, and for cross-straits investment and trade. These symposia attracted more than 500 enterprises and buyers.   The 2008 Western Coast LED Industry Projects Matchmaking Symposium attracted 35 Taiwanese enterprises and 140 mainland enterprises, featuring 67 projects, including 14 projects from Taiwan and two projects from Hong Kong, and three projects found investors.   The 2008 Cross-Straits Automotive Electronics Industry Cooperation Forum attracted more than 10 Taiwanese enterprises and 30 mainland enterprises. The 2008 Integrated Circuit Industry Matchmaking Seminars attracted over 150 enterprises and research institutes, with eight projects signed, involving more than RMB 30 million.   The Cross-Straits Investment and Trade Matchmaking Forum drew over 100 mainland enterprises, development zones, and investment promotion agencies, with more than 210 sessions conducted.   Many exhibiting enterprises and industry associations took advantage of CXMEE to promote their new technologies, processes and products and exchanged views and ideas in these regards. IV.  A wide array of supporting events were staged and CXMEE’s role as a platform for exchanges, friendship and business was further highlighted.   A wide variety of supporting events were also staged at CXMEE, which received an overwhelming response and helped promote technological collaboration and business partnership, prosper the cultural market across the Taiwan Strait, stimulate the development of the industries, and build a brand-new image for Xiamen.   The 3 rd Job Fair for Taiwanese Professionals attracted more than 80 enterprises and 200 Taiwanese graduates. And seminars on topics relating to women brought together more than 100 representatives, who exchanged views on the involvement of women’s groups in social management and public services. The 2008 Cross-Straits (Siming, Xiamen) Folk Cultrual Festival was well received. Major shopping establishments in Xiamen offered concessionary sales during CXMEE, enriching the contents of CXMEE and enhancing the understanding and friendship across the Taiwan Straits.   CXMEE was extensively covered in the Chinese and international press, making numerous headlines with expanding name awareness in China and abroad. A total of 412 journalists from 48 media domestic and foreign organizations reported on CXMEE, including Xinhua News Agency, Economic Daily, Central People’s Radio, CCTV I and IV, China News Services, China Radio International, China Daily, First Financial Times, Xinhua Net, Hong Kong Phoenix Satellite TV, Taiwan Central TV, ETTV, TVBS, SETTV, and Singapore’s United Morning Post. Altogether, more than 1,500 pieces of news were reported on CXMEE.   In 2009, with the improvement of cross-straits relations, cross-straits economic and trade cooperation will enter into a fresh phase of vigorous growth. The opening of the second phase of Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center will allow CXMEE to further expand its scale and enrich its contents. CXMEE is set to play a stronger role as a bridge for cross-straits economic and trade exchanges and communication of policy information, and make greater contributions to the mutual prosperity across the Taiwan Straits and the promotion of the reunification of the motherland.   We appreciate your consistent support for CXMEE.
