In Florida, 86,525 claims have been submitted and 43,552 claimantshad replacement work completed as of April 30. But tens ofthousands more could be eligible for the free replacement, according to the Consumer Plumbing Recovery Center, a nonprofitappointed by the court to administer the $1.1 billion settlementfund.

Polybutylene (PB) pipe plumbing was installed in an estimated 6million homes nationwide from Jan. 1, 1978, to July 31, 1995.

"Some of these pipes leak over time," said Terence McElroy, aspokesman for the state consumer-services department. "If aconsumer has a leak, they can apply to be reimbursed."

In Florida, many single-family homes, multi-unit dwellings andmobile homes constructed during the 1980s and early 1990s used PBplumbing systems.

PB pipes are flexible and gray in color with plastic or metalfittings, which are held in place by aluminum or copper bands. Thepipes are found in attics, within walls or in a water-heatercloset, but are often installed beneath insulation materials.

Replacing the pipes can be costly, and prices vary depending on thecomplexity of the work.

The settlement offers reimbursement for damage to the propertycaused by the leaks, out-of-pocket expenses from leaks in somecases, and replacement of the PB plumbing. It does not cover waterbills, lost time from work and tenant-related expenses or bodilyinjury.

How do you discover a leak if it's not obvious?

A water-usage increase may indicate an unseen leak. Also, visiblewater damage in walls, floors or ceilings could be the result of aPB leak.

Homeowners with leaky pipes must hire a company to repair thedamage and retain all pertinent paperwork, including photographs,to file a claim. If you have already spent money to repair a leakypipe, you may be entitled to a full or partial reimbursement, officials said.
