Why are you running for office?

Langston: "I believe I can make a difference. When we take controlof our democracy, we are able to make it stronger and live out thetrue values our founders intended."

Marks: "Making a positive contribution to the betterment ofSandstone Charter Township motivates me. I strive to stay informedon local issues that impact our residents and vote based on commonsense and the input given to me by constituents/neighbors."

Paulis: "I feel that with my experience with business and myhistory on the board that I can be an asset to the board and thecommunity."

VanWinkle: "I think new ideas brought to the table, as well as my13 years of experience on the Parma Village Board, can have apositive effect on Sandstone Township's future."

Webster: "I am concerned with the total development of the townshipphysically, economically and socially. My main objective would beto carry out the will of the community, to maintain the low densityof rural atmosphere in Sandstone Township."

Wellman: "Community involvement."

What is the most important issue facing the township?

Langston: "While funds are always an issue, given the shakiness ofour economy, jobs, police and fire protection, leadership, andrelationships with neighboring townships, villages and communitiesare all key issues for the township."

Marks: "Besides the local economy, our most pressing issue remainsbalancing the desire to retain the rural/agricultural character andcharm of Sandstone with the need for jobs in our area."

Paulis: "We don't have any real heavy business going. We just haveeveryday business that comes up."

VanWinkle: "All issues that affect the taxpayers of Sandstone areequally important, so I can't single out only one. But if I had tochoose, I would have to say property taxes and employment."

Webster: "The police and fire department, especially the cost forthe village to run them both."

Wellman: "No jobs, high taxes."

How well or how poorly are things going in the township undercurrent leadership?

Langston: "In general, the township has been running status quo. Iwould, however, reach out more to residents for feedback, and bemore responsive to citizen needs and wants."

Marks: "The township leadership demonstrates experience andcommitment. I respect the divergent opinions of our currenttownship board and believe it reflects the diversity in our localresidents."

Paulis: "We feel we're very solid. We've got some very experiencedpeople as clerk, treasurer and supervisor. We seem to be workingtogether very well."

VanWinkle: "Under current leadership, I feel the township isrunning well, but there is always room for improvement with newideas and new faces."

Webster: "I don't have any problem with the current leadership. Ithink they're doing as well as they can with what they have to workwith."

Wellman: "Fair."

Under what circumstance would you advocate raising or loweringtaxes?

Langston: "Under no circumstances at this point would I advocatefor raising taxes. Our taxes are already high, and we need to lookfor ways to lower taxes. I did support the police millage becausewe need to ensure adequate public safety needs."

Marks: "Although I am not a big advocate of higher taxes, I believethat our township needs to protect its citizens. We passed a smallmillage this summer to support our police department."

Paulis: "We have two millages now in Sandstone/Parma for police andfire. Raising taxes would put a strain on our citizens completely.I wouldn't recommend (raising taxes) at all."

VanWinkle: "Public safety is my biggest concern. If all otheravenues to fund our public safety department fail, then I wouldn'tbe opposed to a minimal tax increase. ... I would be against anyunnecessary increases."

Webster: "I do not believe in raising taxes — period."

Wellman: "I would raise taxes just enough to buy enough rope tohang every politician who voted for the bank bail-out bill."
