Sanity savers - the power of NO!
Annual fundraisers – The time has come. Every school, sports team and club armstheir students and members with catalogs filled with overpricedwrapping paper and chocolate covered nuts along with order forms toboost their group’s annual fundraising efforts. They enticethe kids with cheap gifts and prizes to solicit family, friends,neighbors and their parent’s coworkers to buy goods no oneneeds. I will never forget when I was a child the completeexcitement I felt to get out there and present my offerings toeveryone I could think of. I also remember my mother pickingseveral items from the catalog and ordering in the names of severalfriends and family members. Then she would go into the office,retrieve her checkbook from the top drawer, and write out a checkfor the total amount. I always asked her why she would do that andshe would just mumble something about not bothering everyone withstuff they don’t need anyway. I was so confused by heractions until the day I was presented with my first catalog. Sureenough, there on the other side of the order form was a child whowas excitedly explaining that if they could only get $500 in sales,they would get a clock radio! Of course I bought an item or fiveand I was feeling pretty good about it. I had helped a contributedto a worthy cause and helped some kid get his coveted clock radio.After I had filled out my seventh order form that week, Iwasn’t sure I could pay the rent that month. I found myselfrunning and hiding from any kid who so much as glanced my way. Thisis one I had to figure out a solution to quickly. I still orderoccasionally, but I only order once. The first kid who tackles megets my order. After that, I am honest and say I already orderedbut thank you. This works like a charm. My guess is that even ifthere were no first kid, the following ones would never know.
