November 13 marked Versace's typically glamorous first ever runway foray into China - raising an impressive $100,000 for charity into the bargain. Chinese models showcased the label's spring/summer 2009 collection in an opulent setting in the vicinity of Beijing's historic Tiananmen Square as an elite audience of socialites, executives and celebrities - among them Chinese Hollywood action star Jet Li, whose One Foundation benefited from the evening - looked on. "I have to say that doing it here in Beijing has been amazing because of the enthusiasm," Versace says. "I think the Chinese people love fashion - that's what I can feel. It is no different at all because when I think of the collections I think of the global woman, especially the global businesswoman. I think of this woman as very elegant." The show was followed by an auction, where lots including a diamond watch and chance to visit the company in Milan went under the hammer to raise funds for the Versace/One joint initiative, which will go towards supporting the survivors of the devastating earthquake in China's Sichuan province in May. So successful proved the evening that Versace asserted it may become a regular occurrence. "If the economic crisis permits, yes, I'll come every year," she told Reuters. The risk would doubtlessly pay off; earlier this week the fashion house revealed that Asia is on the verge of toppling the US as its second largest market, after Europe. (B40) |
