Several grower members of the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association answered the plea for assistance from Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin this week by donating hundreds of pounds of Wisconsin Russet potatoes. The request comes at a time when many low-income families start to find themselves choosing between paying for food and paying for heat.
Food banks throughout Wisconsin are in short supply and struggling to meet the needs of residents who have lost their homes, jobs, or are just finding it difficult to make ends meet in a tough economy. "Recognizing the adverse affects of the economy, times are already tough for families, which is why a few Wisconsin potato growers and shippers wanted to help our neighbors by donating potatoes," said WPVGA Director Duane Maatz. "We're providing a wholesome, nutritious food product, and challenge anyone who can help to donate to Second Harvest."
According to the Second Harvest Website, 'an estimated 103,000 people, including nearly 39,000 children, may go to bed hungry in southern Wisconsin each day. "For these families, struggling with hunger is a way of life," the organization said on its site. "Second Harvest is a vital link between donated food and funds and every man, woman and child at risk of hunger in southern Wisconsin."
