US: Truck with 19 tons of lettuce hits guardrail, closes I-10 exit

The eastbound Interstate 10 offramp at East Valencia Road was closed temporarily Thursday morning after a tractor-trailer exiting I-10 there hit a guardrail, a state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said. There were no injuries, said Officer Carmen Figueroa. A total of 38,000 pounds of lettuce had to be taken off the truck before it could be moved. The truck damaged 100 feet of guardrail as it slid along the top of the metal barrier in the 3:27 a.m. crash, Figueroa said.



The truck also hit a road sign at the offramp. State workers will repair that, she said.

They will also repair the guardrail. The driver's name wasn't available, Figueroa said.

She said the driver may be cited on suspicion of failure to control his vehicle to avoid a collision.
