Taiwan’s weak 2006 retail environment (sales declined 2.5 percent) gave way in early 2007 to a significant improvement in offtake. September 2007 sales increased 7.6 percent from the previous year to 15.432 billion Taiwan dollars, followed by growth in October of 3.6 percent to 16.219 billion Taiwan dollars. Cumulative January through October retail sales of textiles and apparel grew 4.7 percent to 155.86 billion Taiwan dollars. New optimism has returned for the local economy following the victory in parliamentary elections of the opposition Kuomintang Party.
