HANOI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Some of Vietnam's southern localities have seen increasing demand for Chinese three-wheeler motorized vehicles used to transport goods, the local newspaper Youth said on Wednesday.

Since the government issued a ban on self-modified three- and four-wheeler vehicles in January, aiming to reduce traffic jams and accidents, two enterprises in Tay Ninh province have imported and sold over 20 Chinese three-wheeler vehicles branded Xinling, Yinxiang and Sandi to local people at prices of 35-40 million Vietnamese dong (2,188-2,500 U.S. dollars) per unit.

Other southern localities such as Dong Nai, Tien Giang , Ben Tre, Dong Thap, An Giang and Ho Chi Minh City represent the same situation.

However, Vietnam has yet to issue specific guidelines for registration of such three-wheeler motorized vehicles, the newspaper said.

Self-modified three- and four-wheeler vehicles are useful for transporting goods in areas where roads are too narrow for even mini-trucks. Hawkers at markets and construction material shops are dependent on the three-wheelers to transport their products. Self-employed garbage collectors also use them to make a living.
