The dairy industry today armed farmers with a tool to help them better understand the development of Resource Management Act (RMA) policy. The tool ¨C "Dairy Industry Guidelines for Developing RMA Policy" ¨C was jointly developed in consultation with dairy farmers by Federated Farmers, Dairy NZ and Fonterra. The Guidelines combine easy-to-understand explanations about RMA policy development processes with checklists and worksheets that help farmers develop their own submissions. At today's Dairy Farmers Dairy Section annual conference, the newly elected Chairman and Dairy Environment Leadership Group member Lachlan McKenzie launched the tool. "The aim of the Guidelines is to make it easier for dairy farmers and their advocates to get involved in the early stages of RMA policy development. "Farmers and their advisors are strong supporters of positive environmental outcomes. Widespread use of this tool will help them take the lead to protect the New Zealand environment while at the same time retain their freedom to operate into the future. "Farmers need to improve their understanding of the RMA process in order to participate more effectively and the Guidelines can be a key tool in the process," said Mr McKenzie. DairyNZ Sustainability Programme Manager, Dr Rick Pridmore, was at the Dairy Section conference and commented that the Guidelines will help regional councils and farmers work together to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. "To develop effective and sustainable RMA policies, regional council staff members need to engage at an early stage with dairy farmers and their advocates. Better outcomes are achieved for all parties when there is early engagement and a solution-focused attitude. "This tool helps foster that early engagement. It also assists in making regional councils aware of the potential economic impact on farmers of any policies they develop," said Dr Pridmore. John Hutchings, Fonterra's General Manager of Sustainable Production, says it is important farmers have their say in the revision of RMA policy. "Farmers, more than anyone, understand the importance of protecting their land and their livelihood for the next generation. Their input into the RMA process will ensure the policy strikes the right balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability. "By providing farmers with these Guidelines, we believe its use can help achieve better coordination across the whole industry spectrum ¨C from farmers working at a grassroots level, through to dairy industry leaders and Government stakeholders," said Mr Hutchings. |
