ThyssenKrupp is in talks with the works council at its steel division to shorten working hours amid slumping demand for its products, a spokesman for the company said, confirming a report in daily Handelsblatt.

The German company, which employs about 41,000 workers in its steel division, has already shortened working hours in other parts of its business and let 2,100 temporary workers go.

ThyssenKrupp last month scrapped its mid-term outlook, saying an expected rebound in steel demand by 2010 may not offset its capital goods exposure over the coming years.
