GM cancels franchise make meetings at NADA Source : Automotive News [Posted on Nove 26,2008 at 9:28] DETROIT -- General Motors is canceling its franchise make meetings at the 2009 National Automobile Dealers Association convention to cut costs. Instead, GM will hold one general company meeting on Sunday, Jan. 25. 







The move harks back to GM’s practice from 1999 to 2002, when it stopped holding individual brand meetings in favor of a single session. 



"GM is cutting a lot of expenses and looking at every item," said Michael Martin, the Virginia NADA director and GM line chair for industry relations. "We felt the franchise-specific meetings weren’t as important as the overall general meeting." The convention runs Jan. 24-27 in New Orleans.  



The cancellations come as GM prepares to send Congress a ``viability’??nbsp;plan on Dec. 2 in order to qualify for emergency federal aid. The House Financial Services Committee has scheduled a hearing on the proposals from GM, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC three days later. 



GM has also called off the Minority Dealer Development Conference, which is held in conjunction with NADA, company spokeswoman Susan Garontakos said. The GM Minority Dealer Association scholarship banquet will continue as planned on the evening of Friday, Jan. 23, but GM might not provide a speaker because of the costs. 



Garontakos said the company started thinking about changing its NADA schedule earlier this fall. 



"This is will be the way GM looks at everything we do going forward for the immediate future or long term,’??nbsp;she said. "We’re looking at everything we do.’??nbsp;



CEO Rick Wagoner and Mark LaNeve -- vice president of North American sales, service and marketing -- will attend the dealer meeting, Garontakos said. "Only people who need to be there will be there,’??nbsp;she said. "These are dire times." 



Martin, who owns Dudley Martin Chevrolet in Manassas, Va., said many dealers now are not franchise-specific. The general meeting will run three hours rather than the usual two hours, he says. There will be a minimum 45-minute question-and-answer session, he said.  



"GM wanted to do one large meeting, and we agreed," Martin said. "I don’t know what GM will save by not being there another day, but I think anything that has any cost savings for them is being reviewed right now."
