The Jilin province government in Northeast China has announced that central government has approved the "Flesh cattle industry comprehensive processing project". This means that about 700 thousand peasants in the province will be taking on flesh cattle raising as their main job.

In 1998 the central government accessed 11 preponderant industry zones and Jilin province was rated the most suitable for raising flesh cattle. With the launch of the policy for bracing up the old industry zone in Northeast China in 2003, Jilin province submitted its programme to the central government and started collecting investment funds by issuing public debt.

Mayor of Changchun city - the capital of Jilin province, Mr Zhu Ye Jing, estimated the total investment at approximately $243.2 million (?1.997 billion). The programme is designed to create over 5,000 jobs and realise an annual production value of $12.8 million (?10.5 billion) after completion. The output of cattle and sheep skin in Jilin will, consequently, expand from 200,000 to 500,000 pieces a year.
