Belgium : EU pulls Chinese sweaters & cardigans under wraps
[2008-12-23 17:05:06]
A recently concluded deal between the EU and China, facilitated China to export 69 million sweaters and cardigans from June 11. However, the European Commission after July 12 stopped issuing licenses for Chinese sweater and cardigans as the country crossed the yearly limits, EU spokeswoman Claude Veron-Reville informed. Earlier, Chinese textiles have been put under scanner by both, the EU and the US with the latter already imposing restrictions on the certain categories. Also since last couple of weeks Chinese footwear imports have been in news claimed to be harming domestic makers for which the EU may announce similar action. EU hardliners like Eurotex and certain member countries such as France, Italy, Spain and Portugal have jointly voiced concerns over the unrestricted Chinese imports to EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson. For now, Chinese producers will have to seek alternate markets for survival. |
