China Export Leading Index Still Down in April 2015

For this April, China's Export Leading Index (ELI) reached 35.9, month-on-month down by 2.3 from this March, straight two-month decline suggesting the export turnaround will not persist for the second quarter this year. As revealed by an online questionnaire survey, this April, China's Export Management Index reached 39.5, down by 0.5 from March; its New Export Order Index, Export Managers Confidence Index and Export Enterprises Comprehensive Cost Index respectively reached 39.6, 46 and 26.2, respectively down by 0.8, 0.3 and 0.5 from March.

1. Mild fall in the Export Management Indexes of large and medium-sized enterprises: For April, China's large enterprises made their Export Management Index at 40.7, down by 0.5 from March, and medium enterprises made their Export Management Index at 38.6, down by 1.2 from March, while small enterprises made their Export Management Index up by 0.2 from March to 37.4.

2. 26.4% enterprises revealing year-on-year (YOY) rise in their new order value: Shown by the online survey, for April, the enterprises revealing YOY rise in their new order value accounted for 26.4%, the same as March; the enterprises revealing YOY fall in their new order value accounted for 48.2%, more by 0.9 percentage points than March; and those revealing no change therein accounted for 25.4%.

3. Less enterprises optimistic about their exports in next 2-3 months: Shown by the online survey, the enterprises expressing "optimistic" about their exports in the next 2-3 months accounted for 27.3%, less by 1.3 percentage points than March; and those expressing "not optimistic" thereabout accounted for 37.1%, less by 0.4 percentage point than March.

4. Slightly more respondents revealing cost rise: Shown by the online survey, the enterprises revealing YOY rise in their export comprehensive cost accounted for 56.6%, more by 0.4 percentage point than March; those revealing YOY evenness therein accounted for 35.7%; and those revealing YOY fall therein accounted for 7.7%.

According to the survey in itemized costs for April, the enterprises revealing increase in their labor cost accounted for 60.9%, less by 0.9 percentage point than March; those revealing increase in their raw-material cost accounted for 37.7%, more by 0.2 percentage point than March; and those revealing increase in their foreign-exchange cost accounted for 32.8%, less by 0.6 percentage point than March.
