India to Impose 14% Import Duty on Chinese Power Equipments

[2010-09-30 08:45:27]

According to a report on September 24, 2010 from the Wall Street Journal, Minister of Heavy Industries of India, Vilasrao Deshmukh claimed  that he has demanded the Ministry of Finance of India to impose an import duty of 14% on Chinese power equipments.

As per Deshmukh's remarks, India has to protect domestic manufacturers. Indian manufacturers of power equipments (such as boilers, steamers, and generators) are faced with fierce competition against Chinese enterprises because such equipments can be sold at quite low prices by Chinese enterprises.

The two largest manufacturers of power equipments in India are the State-owned enterprise Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. and Larsen & Toubro Ltd.
