Switzerland-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement Effective on Oct. 1

According to Swiss government website, the Switzerland-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will come into effect on October 1, 2012.

The Switzerland-Hong Kong FTA covers regulations on the trade of manufactured goods, processed farm produce and services, investment, Intellectual Property Right protection, and environmental protection.

Under the FTA, zero duty will be applied to Swiss exports and Hong Kong-manufactured goods and preferential duties will be applied to agricultural exports from Hong Kong; regarding service sector, Swiss enterprises in Hong Kong can enjoy the more preferential market access and national treatment than the WTO and GATS rules.

According to official Swiss statistics, in 2011, Swiss exports to Hong Kong totaled 7.9 billion Swiss francs, mainly clocks/watches, jewelry and mechanical products, and Swiss imports from Hong Kong totaled 1.8 billion Swiss francs.
