Market participants revealed that Brazilian government had decided to increase the import tariff on seven steel products starting Jun 10.

The import tariff on HR plate and coil, cold-rolled plate and coil, carbon steel heavy plate will soar to 12% from zero while that on alloy-steel will reach 14% from zero.

In March 2005, Brazilian government removed the import tariff on the seven steel products. But under the condition of global financial crisis and fierce competition from foreign countries, Brazilian domestic steel mills eagerly asked the government to protect the domestic industry.

Currently, imported steel products account for 14% of Brazilian domestic market and Brazil mainly imports the steel products from China.
