Jamaica Proposal to Reduce the Import Tariff from 40 Percent to 20 Percent

[2011-08-01 09:58:18]

There is another call this afternoon for Jamaicans to resist the Government's proposal to reduce the Common External Tariff from 40 per cent to 20 per cent.

The proposal is among the considerations of the Government's Tax Reform agenda.

Robert Miller, a director of the Banana Board, argued that a cut in the tariff would expose many sectors including the recovering banana industry.

He was speaking during a function at the Denbigh Agri Industrial Show in Clarendon July 31, 2011 to launch an initiative by the European Union to help with the public awareness and promotion of the Banana Board.
