Algeria Defers Tariff Cancel for the EU

Algeria's trade minister indicates that, in 2005, Algeria and the EU signed a cooperation agreement on gradual cancel of tariffs on each other to build a mutual free trade area in 2017 and that, during 2005-2009, Algeria suffered a loss of USD 2.5 billion from its implementation of the agreement.

For economy and trade reasons, in late 2010, the Algerian government called for postponing the tariff cancel deadline to 2020, which has been permitted by the EU and entered into effect on September 1, 2012.

Algeria-EU trade value accounts for 57% of Algerian foreign-trade total, its import from the EU at USD 20 billion per annum.
