Recently, the president of Jordan Iron-Steel Chamber of Commerce indicated that Jordan will levy protective tariffs on imports of reinforcing steel bars to provide opportunities of fair competition for domestic steel makers.

Affected by the political and economic unrest in Arab regions, steel demands in Jordan have largely declined compared with the past few years. Meanwhile, the Jordan Government is reducing its projects and the projects of private sectors are limited to housings, which also lead to fewer steel demands to certain degree in the country.

The Jordan Government will enhance regulation of the steel bar specifications, with their diameters from 8mm to 32mm and length from 4m to 12m. The government will take legal measures to punish the violating makers.

Jordanian steel makers say that the fuel cost of external makers does not exceed 25 dinars/ton, while their fuel cost is about 475 dinars/ton; now, the average bar price in Jordan is 595 dinars/ton-610 dinars/ton.
