Burundi Keeps Lower Food Duties

According to local media on January 3, the Burundi Government will continue to reduce food import duties. Actually, this measure, which aims to maintain the security of basic foods, should have been terminated at the end of 2012, but the government decided to extend it to June 2013.

Duty reduction measures on food have been carried out for over 6 months, which was mainly used for 12 kinds of basic foods, for instance, cassava (powder), wheat (powder), fish or dried fish, peanut, potato, beans, onion, rice and palm oil, etc.

Although Burundi has had slightly more grain output, it is not enough yet in long-term consideration. The most optimistic observation indicates that the grain output from Burundi can balance supply-demand relation and stabilize grain prices in the future.
