Fujian’s Mobile Phone Export Up in Price & Down in Quantity in 2016

According to China Customs statistics, in 2016, Fujian Province exported 19.192 million sets of mobile phones, down 48.6% year-on-year (YOY); worth RMB 6.6 billion yuan, down 24.4% YOY; at average export price of 343.8 yuan per set, up 47% YOY. Therein, 53 sets were exported from Fuzhou port, down 57.3% YOY; worth 22,000 yuan, up 21.5% YOY.
1. Characteristics of Mobile Phone Export from Fujian in 2016:
(1) Monthly export quantity was in the descending trend, average price keeping up YOY. In January 2016, Fujian Province mobile phone export began to descend, down YOY at 2-digit rate from April and monthly quantity less than 700,000 sets in the 4th quarter; in December, the export reached 671,000 sets, down 77.5% YOY and up 2.3% month-on-month (MOM). The average export price continued YOY uptrend since November 2015, hitting 2-year high in December at 775.1 yuan per set, up 1.8 times YOY and up 70.5% MOM.
(2) Most of the export was by ordinary trade. In 2016, 19.181 million sets were exported by ordinary trade mode, a decrease of 48.6% YOY, accounting for 99.9% of the total quantity.
(3) Regarding export quantity, foreign-invested enterprises accounted for half, private enterprises dropped sharply, and state-owned enterprises surged. In 2016, in Fujian Province, foreign-invested enterprises exported 9.772 million mobile phones, down 34.9% YOY, accounting for 50.9% of the total; private enterprises exported 8.355 million sets, down 62.3% YOY, accounting for 43.6%; state-owned enterprises exported 1.065 million sets, an increase of 4.6 times YOY, accounting for 5.5%.
(4) Hong Kong was the largest export market, and exports to India and Latin American countries increased substantially. In 2016, 16.364 million sets of mobile phones were exported to Hong Kong, down 51.3% YOY, accounting for 85.3% of the total quantity; 503,000 sets were exported to USA, up 29.5% YOY, accounting for 2.6%. In addition, 319,000 sets were exported to India, up 92.7% YOY; 245,000 sets were exported to Brazil, up 11.3 times YOY; 136,000 sets were exported to the Dominican Republic, up 1.8 times YOY; 128,000 sets exported to Uruguay, up 20.1 times YOY.
2. Notable Problems:
(1) Due to low profit, China’s mobile phone industry will likely have a new round of consolidation.
(2) With overseas competition getting harder, the Chinese export is under increasing pressure.
