Wine Import to Guangdong Kept Increasing in 2016

According to China Customs statistics, in 2016, Guangdong Province imported 140 million liters of grape wine, increased by 13.9% year-on-year (YOY) on the basis of 45.3% increase in 2015; worth RMB7.8 billion yuan, up 14.3% YOY, with average import price at 56.3 yuan per liter, up 0.4% YOY.
Characteristics of the Wine Import in 2016:
(1) December import rose from November month-on-month (MOM). The wine import quantity to Guangdong Province continued YOY increasing from January 2015 to June 2016, and dropped YOY in July and September 2016; import prices hit a two-year low in June and then rebounded to 50 yuan/liter. In December, the import quantity grew to 14.98 million liters by 18.2% YOY and 25.7% MOM; average import price was 56.3 yuan/liter, down 12.9% YOY and up 9.3% MOM (see the chart below).
Characteristics of the Wine Import in 2016:
(1) December import rose from November month-on-month (MOM). (2) Ordinary trade import accounted for over 60%. In 2016, Guangdong imported 88.32 million liters in ordinary trade, up 16.6% YOY, accounting for 63.8% of the total quantity; imported 48.41 million liters under Customs special control, up 8.8% YOY, accounting for 35% of the total; imported 1091,000 liters free of tax, down 15.6% YOY.
(3) The most imported were small-packaged fresh grape wine. In 2016, Guangdong imported "fresh grape-brewed wine in ≤2-liter container" totaling 118 million liters, an increase of 20% YOY, accounting for 85.2%, average price at 50.4 yuan/liter, up 0.6% YOY; imported distilled-wine liquor totaling 12.56 million liters, up 3.9% YOY, average price at 139.2 yuan/liter, down 6% YOY; imported "fresh grape-brewed wine in 〉2-liter container" totaling 6.266 million liters, a decrease of 29% YOY, average price at 10.8 yuan/liter, a substantial increase of 55.6% YOY.
(4) The import increased from the EU and Australia while mildly reduced from Chile. In 2016, Guangdong imported 84.61 million liters from the EU, an increase of 14.9% YOY, accounting for 61.1% of the total import (with 58.44 million liters from France, up 11.3% YOY, and 15.42 million liters from Spain, up 30.8% YOY); imported 23.86 million liters from Australia, up 21.8% YOY; imported 20.76 million liters from Chile, down 1.6% YOY. The three together accounted for 93.4% of the total quantity.
