May Monthly Steel Fact Sheet

The preliminary data released today show that overall steel imports in May 2008 decreased 17.71 percent from April 2008 . The change in May’s total amount of steel imports was due to a general decrease in most goods, such as reinforcing bars (-68%), wire rods (-55%), and blooms, billets, and slabs (-40%). Galvanized hot dipped sheets and strip increased significantly with an 89% growth. Stainless imports decreased only slightly (-0.53%) resulting from mixed increases and decreases in individual stainless products. May 2008 imports of steel mill products were down 25 percent compared to May 2007.
