Shipping companies to benefit from cost savings of direct Taiwan-China links

[2008-12-23 16:53:31]

China on Monday launched regular direct flights, shipping and postal services with Taiwan, lifting a ban imposed in 1949.

This is expected to boost trade and also promote economic integration between the two sides.

Direct air and sea transport links, as well as postal services between mainland China and Taiwan, are now a reality.

"It is not just transportation. I think it definitely benefits cross-strait economy, especially now Taiwan's affected by the financial turmoil. Now the three direct links will add vitality to Taiwan's economy and we should cherish this. We are very happy and excited," said the vice-chairman of Kuomintang (KMT), John Chiang.

China's Shipping Container Lines Company Limited and Cosco Shipping are the first to take advantage of the direct route.

Chinese and Taiwanese vessels will be able to sail directly between the two sides without first having to stop at a third port, usually Japan's Ishigaki, Busan or Hong Kong. And this will result in huge saving costs.

Vessels departing from Shanghai's Yan Shan Deep-Sea Port will arrive at Taiwan's Kaoshiung Port two days later.

This cuts the previous journey between the two ports by a third -- a whole day's savings or US$20,000 per vessel.

According to China's Ministry of Transport, annual cross-strait shipping volume hit more than US$100 billion last year.

Direct shipping will not only save 110,000 hours in travel time, it will shave off US$100 million in transport costs each year.

The mainland will open 63 ports to Taiwan ships while Taiwan will open 11 ports.

And with daily flights, the number of direct flights will increase to 108 per week.

Flight time will also be shortened to just 80 minutes as planes no longer have to fly through Hong Kong airspace.
