DuPont Introduces DuPont™ Active Layer RS Films DATE: 2008-12-11

Wilmington, Del.-based DuPont has developed a renewably sourced moisture barrier film for carpet cushioning. Designed to replace entirely petroleum-based moisture barrier films, DuPont™ Active Layer RS films are made from naturally occurring fatty acids and contain a minimum of 20-percent renewably sourced content by weight.

The films initially are being used as part of Richmond, Va.-based Carpenter Co.??s EnviroStep™ carpet cushioning technology. The films are laminated to the cushion??s top surface to block penetration of spills or liquids.

??High performance is critical to the successful adoption of bio-based products,?? said Keith J. Smith, vice president and general manager, DuPont Engineering Polymers. ??DuPont market-driven science is paying off with new offerings such as DuPont Active Layer RS that provide comparable or better performance than the petrochemical-based materials they replace.??

Active Layer RS moisture barrier films are the newest addition to DuPont??s line of renewably sourced plastics for the US carpet cushion market. Other products include Sorona® EP thermoplastic resins, Hytrel® RS thermoplastic elastomers, renewably sourced grades of Zytel® long-chain polyamides, Biomax® PTT and Biomax TPS packaging resins, and Selar® VP packaging films.
