Guangzhou, Ningbo Join Top Ten Club in 2008

Port of Guangzhou and Port of Ningbo edged in the world top ten container ports in terms of the throughput in 2008.
Guangzhou Port handled 11 million containers (TEU) last year, soaring 18.8% year on year and thus exceeding the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Kaohsiung to ascend from 12th to 7th.
Ningbo Port ascended from 11th to 8th with an annual throughput of 10.846m TEUs in 2008.
Besides them, Port of Shanghai, Hong Kong, Port of Shenzhen, and Port of Qingdao are all on the list of the top ten. But the situation in 2009 is not bright. Guangzhou Port just handled 600,000 TEUs this January, plunging 34% year on year. Port of Hong Kong reported 1% growth in annual container throughput in 2008, the lowest since 2001.
