ILA, employers prepare for talks long before contract expires September 30
16 Dec 2008
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and maritime employers will open talks in February on a Atlantic and Gulf Coast docker contract, a year-and-a-half before the current six-year contract expires, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.

ILA president Richard Hughes and his USMX counterpart, James Capo, have wanted to start talks soon so shippers would not be tempted to divert cargo from ILA ports as the September 30 contract expiration approaches.

"I have no reason to believe we will fail in our efforts to get a new contract that amply rewards our membership and helps the companies remain vibrant and profitable," said Mr Hughes, of the ILA.
