DESPITE OOIL chairman Tung Chee Chen saying things "look pessimistic next year,'' the parent company of OOCL is still pressing ahead with its schedule to take delivery of nine new box ships next year.

A report by AXS-Alphaliner News points out that during 2009, OOCL will take delivery of seven 4,578-TEU containerships and two 8,063-TEU vessels.

It said that all of the ships will be built by Samsung Heavy Industries.

The report said that OOCL is scheduled to take delivery of 11 more box ships, including eight 8,000+ TEU ships before the end of 2011 that will be built in both South Korean and Chinese shipyards.

The report added that OOCL's orderbook will raise the Hong Kong-based carrier's capacity by about 129,000 TEU, which it said translates in to roughly one third of OOCL's present slot capacity.
