CN, Chicago suburbs settle on eco-rail deal ahead of buyout
15 Dec 2008
LOCAL communities impacted by Canadian National Railway's proposed purchase of the Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railroad (EJ&E) circumvents Chicago are making gain in persuading four city suburbs to accept new levels of railway traffic.

"Today's agreement adds to those we have reached with Joliet, Crest Hill and Chicago Heights, Illinois, and Dyer, Indiana," said CN vice president Gordon Trafton, after striking a deal with the Village of Mundelein.

"We are continuing talks with other municipalities on the EJ&E line in hopes of reaching similar agreements," he said.

The federal Surface Transportation Board (STB) demands local resolution of objections over safety and pollution and has assisted in creating quiet zones and to improve access to the Metra suburban transit system.

Said Mundelein mayor Ken Kessler: "We believe our efforts have been fruitful, producing an agreement that will safeguard our community's interests."

The report added that CN has committed to meet all STB's mitigation standards under a programme. CN has earmarked $100 million for infrastructure improvements on the line and remains hopeful that the federal STB will authorise the transaction soon.
