Asia DHL forwarders to move million TEU in sea freight
15 Dec 2008
DHL has announced that its Global Forwarding business unit in Asia Pacific is anticipated to handle more than one million TEU of ocean freight by the end of the 2008 calendar year.

This would represent almost a 25 per cent spike in volume, up from handling 800,000 TEU in 2007.

The company attributed the volume growth largely to a significant increase in intra-regional trade and the development and expansion of direct services on trade lanes between Asia Pacific ports and those in the Middle East, Africa, South America and Eastern Europe.

It said in a statement that driving much of the growth in ocean freight volume experienced by DHL Global Forwarding throughout the Asia Pacific region has been a focus on the development of new, and sometimes unique, direct and guaranteed weekly less-than-container-load services between key Asia Pacific ports and targeted growth markets around the world.

"DHL Global Forwarding has developed 25 new services so far this year," said Kelvin Leung, DHL Global Forwarding's Hong Kong-based CEO for North Asia Pacific.

This year DHL Global Forwarding launched services from Hong Kong to Manuas in Brazil and Hong Kong to Bratislava, Slovakia.

"Much of the growth in new guaranteed weekly services also resulted in continued export volume ex Shanghai; with services showing particularly strong demand including those to Busan, Chennai, Dubai and Istanbul," the company statement added.
