California, EPA to insist on smog detectors on heavy trucks
15 Dec 2008
HEAVY trucks must have diagnostic systems installed to alert drivers of excessive emissions and mechanical malfunctions to legally work highways in coming years.

The rules, covering vehicles weighing over 14,000 pounds, come from the Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board, reports American Shipper, which added that the regulations will cover all such vehicles on 2013 with increasing levels of compliance demanded from 2010.

Authorities will require automakers to ensure one engine family has onboard diagnostic systems (OBD) that meet standards in each model year from 2010 to 2012, with 2013 final deadline for all trucks.
