PACTL (Shanghai Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminal Ltd) has for the first time handled more than one million tons of airfreight in a calendar year.

PACTL, in which Lufthansa Cargo owns 29-per cent, is responsible for almost 50 per cent of Pudong Airport tonnage, said a Lufthansa press statement.

"The success of PACTL confirms our strategy of being present with logistical services in the world's most important growth market," said Lufthansa Cargo CEO Carsten Spohr. "We will, therefore, continue to develop our activities in China next year."

Since PACTL started in 1999, it has become the second-largest independent cargo terminal operator in China and is one of the fastest-growing airfreight handlers. Also partners are Shanghai Airport Group and JHJ Logistics Management, which hold 51 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Besides its involvement in PACTL, Lufthansa Cargo also has a 50 per cent holding in a ground handling company in Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Airport International Cargo Terminal. In addition, the airline Jade Cargo International, in which Lufthansa Cargo holds 25 per cent, serves important economic centres worldwide with a current total of five Boeing 747-400 freighters.
