South China’s Nansha aims to double throughput

The port of Nansha in Panyu, Guangzhou is targeting a 100% growth in throughput to reach 2.16m TEU in 2006, the Guangzhou Port Group confirmed. An executive of the GPR, which owns a 51% stake in the port, said they are very confident of reaching the target as the port has already handled 600 000TEU in the first quarter, more than half of the total volume ( 1.08m TEU)of 2005. Nansha, located on the west bank of the Pearl River, is a joint venture between Guangzhou Port Group and Guangzhou Nansha Assets Operations Company, with the former owning a 51% stake and the latter 49%. Nansha phase I, which China Shipping bought a 40% stake in from the port company, has four berths with a designed capacity of 1.4m TEU. Meanwhile, phase II of Nansha, 59% shares of which were bought by COSCO Pacific, is under construction. The first two berths, among a total of six, will start operations by the end of this year, while the rest will be completed in September 2007. The designed capacity is 4.2m TEU. |
