  Intensive Course On Economics Of The Creative Industries And The Role Of Intellectual Property (IP)



Mr. Ang I-Ming, Director of the Legal Policy and International Affairs Division, attended the above World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) sponsored course which was held at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands from 23 to 27 April 2007.



The course aimed to provide participants with an understanding of the various dimensions of the economics of creative industries and the role which IP plays in shaping economics in the creative sector. The course was attended by a total of 13 senior officers from IP and cultural agencies of China, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.



Subject matter experts conducted daily lectures and discussions on a broad range of topics, providing valuable insights from both a theoretical as well as a practical perspective. Lecture topics included "Law and Economics of IP", "Administration of Copyright Participants - theory & practice", "Case Studies of Collecting Societies in Various Countries", "International Copyright Law" and "Measurement of the Economic Contribution of Copyright". Each participant also presented on the salient aspects of the main creative industries in his or her country. Overall, the course was an interesting platform which allowed participants to learn from the experiences shared by both the course instructors and fellow participants.
