China Bans Imports of Some Japanese Foods

China has announced an immediate ban on the import of some Japanese food and agricultural products. That's due to fears they could be contaminated by radiation from the earthquake-damaged nuclear power plant.

China's quality watchdog said in a statement on March 26, 2011 that the restrictions were needed to ensure the safety of food and agricultural products in China.

The ban covers dairy, seafood, fruit and vegetables from five Japanese prefectures. The regulator did not say how long the ban would remain in effect.

China is also stepping up radiation checks on other food products from those, and other parts of Japan.
