Burma Reduced Tax on Domestic Tobacco & Alcohol and Raised Duty on Imported Tobacco & Alcohol

According to a report from a Burmese weekly news publication, Burma is to reduce the taxation on domestic tobacco and alcohol as from June 1, 2010 so as to improve the competitiveness of domestic tobacco and alcohol against the imported ones in the Burmese market.

The commodities enjoying the tax reduction include domestic cigarettes, domestic Myanmar Rum, brandy, whisky and other domestic whisky.

For domestic cigarettes, the tax rate is reduced to 50% from previous 75%. For domestic alcohol, the tax rate is reduced to 50% from previous 60%. And for imported alcohol, the tax rate is raised to 100% from previous 75%.
